Following a January 2020 Executive Order committing Rhode Island to use 100 percent renewable energy for electricity production by 2030, the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources (OER) undertook a variety of economic and energy market analyses throughout the last year. Based on this analysis and extensive stakeholder engagement through three workshops, OER developed several policy and programmatic recommendations, which it released in “The Road to 100% Renewable Electricity by 2030 in Rhode Island" report in January 2021. The study examines the impact and cost of existing renewable energy technologies and barriers for their implementation. The report then outlines 10 recommendations for policy, planning and enabling, and equity. Rhode Island has been one of many states involved in the NARUC NASEO Task Force on Comprehensive Electricity Planning, which has informed their approach.
